Reality:

Happy Reality Day!

刷视频,看电影,玩游戏,看书,听音乐,旅游,学习是输入;

输入是消费,输出是创造;

输入是被动的,输出是主动的;

想写文章?写只有一段话的日记就算;

想画画?拿张纸,别看什么教程,想到啥拿起笔就画;

想学做饭?买几样菜一并扔到锅里就开始炒,做熟就行;

Reality: Output Instead of Input

tedwild.com  | 2023.6.7

Happy Reality Day! Here is your weekly dose of reality to help you live 1% happier.

1 Insight From Me

The happiness of input is never as good as output.

Watch videos, movies, play games, read books, listen to music, travel, and study are inputs;

Writing, shooting videos, drawing, cooking, doing handicrafts, playing musical instruments, and singing are outputs.

Input is consumption, output is creation;

Input is passive, output is active;

Input is existing, output is new.

Input happiness lasts only a short time, while output happiness lasts a long time.

Input is dopamine-type pleasure, output is endorphin-type pleasure.

Dopamine-type pleasures are short-lived and have a fatal hidden feature—after calming down, dopamine does not return to the previous level, but a little lower than before. This lower point opens Pandora’s box, leaving you never satisfied, only more and more addicted.

The endorphin-type happiness lasts for a long time, allowing you to grow while enjoying pleasure.

Output is creation, and human likes to create and needs to create by nature. Our ancestors tens of thousands of years ago weaved shell necklaces, made bone bagpipes, painted cave paintings, smashed stones into hand axes, and created everything by themselves. But in our current society, there is a lot of input. Endless videos, movies, books, music, posts, and games that you can’t consume in your whole life. So we rely more on non-braining input stimuli that can be obtained while lying down for dopamine-type pleasure, rather than creating endorphin-type pleasure.

The biggest problem here is not that we don’t know how to create, but that we don’t “think” about creating at all, we don’t have the mindset of “I want to create something”.

And because people are forced to change, many people who could have created many beautiful things just swiped away their lives as they swipe the screens.

1 Insight From Others

“In other words, any act that rejects immediate gratification in favor of long-term growth, health, or integrity. Or, expressed another way, any act that derives from our higher nature instead of our lower. Any of these will elicit Resistance.”

— Steven Pressfield, The War of Art

1 Small Step To Take

“Just start”:

Think of one thing you’ve always wanted to try, and do it just a little bit, just to start is a win:

Want to write? Just write a diary with only one sentence;

Want to draw? Take a piece of paper, don’t read any tutorials, pick up a pen and draw whatever comes to mind;

Want to learn to cook? Buy a few ingredients, throw them into the pot and start frying;

Want to learn a language? Just follow an introductory video and learn it.

Just start.

PPS:

I broke one of my ribs recently. I still go to work and swim every day. The only difference is that I often hold my chest and scream “ah~ah~” with an ugly expression. Maybe it was because the scream was too kinky, people all staring at me with disgust and curiosity.

What is the meaning of this short story? There is no meaning, why do you have to get a meaning in everything you do, that is a sign of insecurity.

(The meaning is to highlight the firm will and thick skin of the character Ted Wild.)
